Our kid’s wish list for valuable gifts

“Dream big, because dreams do happen.“

I was wondering what I would write if I should complete my kid’s wish list. Not about physical objects but abstract values that I would look for when it comes to present ideas for (my) children.

Why a kid's wish list for parents?

When our loved ones arrive with sparkling eyes sharing with us their Christmas or birthday wishes we are often overwhelmed and tend to make everything to make those whishes happen.

But it is probably better and more rewarding in the long term to have a little check list in our heads that will help us to offer pedagogically valuable presents.

I have to admit that I always intuitively go through this list and if they don’t fit those values – it will probably be hard to find them under our Christmas tree.

I started bada&bou out of a personal frustration about those missing “unique and worthwile presents” that I was looking for. And yes, I think with our collection of play furniture we probably meet most of these points listed below (if not all of them).

Here is our kid’s gift wish list:

Long-lasting & sustainable

A very general but extremely important one for us.

The things we offer to our children should be able to be discovered, played with and loved over years. Of course, kids loose naturally their interest within time but if those objects are worthwhile and well designed, your kid will always come back to them as they are evergreen favorites and have a special bond with them (like they sometimes have with plush toys). Next to being sustainable in use they should of course be sustainable in materials and production.

Time & gender-less

If we talk about long lasting presents for our kids it will mean that those will eventually be used by several children (and adults). They will wander from the kids’ room to the living room, from one sibling to the other and in the best-case scenario they will be pretty enough to stay once the kids are grown up. Therefor they should have a gender-neutral and timeless design. And definitely no preconceived color or gender code needed!

Cute & soft

I guess we all agree on the fact that kids and we as adults are attracted to cute and soft things – they appeal to our natural instincts to cuddle and take care. At the same time, they make us feel comfortable and relaxed. Animals have this natural gift to stimulate these qualities and combining these attributes with nice and soft materials will make a perfect match.

Playful & multifunctional

Play furniture and toys are well designed if they stimulate brain and motor skills. Especially over the first years of childhood movement and active, open-ended play is fundamental for a healthy mental and physical development. If those activity toys also offer a variety of functions and ways to use them it will keep them interesting and valuable over time.

Good friends to grow up and relax with

Last but not least moments of calm and relaxation have become more and more important in our busy world. I always try to create a soothing environment for my kids to calm down and “digest” their daily adventures. Therefore, we should always have an eye that action and relaxation is well balanced in our daily routines.  And yes - I love the fact that our play buddies that spread fun, movement and joy can also be used to relax and unwind.

Generally speaking, I would say that the quote “less but better” is probably well placed here. It is often more rewarding for the entire family to have few really unique long-lasting presents than a bunch of little presents that find themselves in the hidden back of their cupboards within some weeks.

I hope you have a helpful guideline for the next round of presents for your child and of course feel inspired to visit our webshop for some further inspiration as our collection of play furniture with the rocking whale, jumping rabbit and rolling elephant probably fit most of these points.
